Why take this course

Many organisations have no change team and no heavy method, and still need change to go well. This course gives people with no experience a practical, light toolkit they can use straight away, without a big team or a big process.

What you will be able to do

To take someone from no experience to planning and supporting a real change with a simple, light toolkit. It is a practical practitioner course built for organisations that are new to change management, so the approach is deliberately light. It is our own method and is not a Prosci course. By the end, you will be able to:

  • Explain why change succeeds or fails, and what changes for people.
  • Use the UPELO™ method (Understand, Plan, Equip, Launch, Own) to plan and run a change from first conversation to handover.
  • Assess the impact of a change and map who is affected.
  • Build a one-page change plan, including communications, training and support.
  • Run a readiness check and recommend go, hold or adjust.
  • Recruit and support champions, and handle resistance respectfully.
  • Set simple measures for whether people are using the new way, and plan a proper handover.
  • Tailor a light approach for an organisation that is new to change management.

What you will cover

  1. 1

    Why change succeeds or fails

Day 1. The people side of change, what changes for individuals and for the organisation, the role of a change practitioner, and a plain-English tour of established models (ADKAR, Kotter, Lewin) and how they relate to UPELO™.

  2. 2

Our UPELO™ method and your starting point

Day 1. Understand, Plan, Equip, Launch, Own, and how to scale it to the size of the change. Judge how mature your organisation is at change and choose a light or fuller approach.

  3. 3

    Understand

Day 1 to 2. The case for change, impact assessment, stakeholder analysis and mapping, and the first view of risks and dependencies.

  4. 4

    Plan

Day 2. Objectives and success measures, the sponsor roadmap, communications plan, change roadmap and the start of your one-page change plan.

  5. 5

    Equip

Day 2 to 3. Training needs and support, building and using a champions network, and preparing managers to lead their teams through the change.

  6. 6

    Launch

Day 3. Readiness check and a go, hold or adjust recommendation, running the launch, and handling resistance respectfully.

  7. 7

    Own

Day 3. Adoption measures, tracking benefits, reinforcing the new way of working, and a proper handover so the change sticks.

  8. 8

    Your toolkit and assessment

Finish your one-page change plan and take away simple templates: impact assessment, stakeholder map, communications plan, readiness checklist and adoption tracker.

This covers the topics a practitioner-level change course is expected to: theory and models, impact and stakeholder analysis, planning, communications, training and support, readiness, resistance, adoption and sustainment. It is our own course and is not an accredited qualification.
